Tours to Croatia from Kyiv — Last-Minute Deals

Croatia means the Adriatic at its clearest, pine woods right down to the shore and well over a thousand islands and islets. The coast falls into Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia, each with its own character: Venetian-style towns, resorts dating back to Austria-Hungary, Roman palaces and long pebble beaches beneath the mountains. Getting there from Kyiv is possible by coach tour, skipping flights altogether, with a ride of 32–34 hours via Lviv, Transcarpathia and Budapest, or on a charter from Poland or Moldova. The country belongs to Schengen and pays in euros.

Coach packages cover the ride, your room and medical insurance, whereas air packages come with tickets, a meet-and-greet transfer, hotel and cover. Most people stay in hotels that serve breakfast or breakfast and dinner, or rent apartments and villas; all-inclusive resorts are few. From Kyiv by Coach or Plane

Coaches run from April until mid-October, leaving Kyiv on Tuesdays and Fridays, with Saturdays added at the height of summer. Passengers board in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Rivne, Lviv, Stryi and Mukachevo, and they are registered in EES as the coach crosses into the EU. The coach drops passengers off at resort stops; from there, walk or taxi to the hotel, or book a private car from €80. Luggage: one bag or case weighing no more than 25 kg and a backpack of 5 kg at most, and every child, however small, needs a seat.

Sights Worth the Trip

• Plitvice Lakes. Sixteen cascading lakes linked by waterfalls, a UNESCO national park on the way between Zagreb and the coast.
• Split and Trogir. A Roman emperor's palace where people still live today, and a medieval island town next door.
• Dubrovnik. A walk along nearly 2 km of ramparts above the terracotta roofs of the old town.
• Hvar and Brač. Lavender fields, fashionable waterfronts and the famous Zlatni Rat spit near the town of Bol.
• Inland Istria. The Roman arena in Pula, the hilltop town of Motovun and truffles in local trattorias.

The Adriatic Season

• May and June. Daytime highs of +23…+27 °C as the sea warms from +18 to +22 °C; prices are lower than in summer.
• July – August. Peak season: around +30 °C in Dalmatia, water at +24…+26 °C and crowded beaches.
• September. The sea is still about +23 °C and the heat eases, making it the best month for touring.
• April and October. Good for sightseeing and walks; coaches run less often then, once a week.

What a Holiday Costs

Costs for a tour to Croatia for two depend mainly on transport, region and month: coach travel with an apartment works out much cheaper than a flight and a beachfront hotel. The cheapest months are May, June and September; midsummer costs most. Nearly every resort charges a tourist tax, set by the town and season. Beaches are mostly pebble and free to use, while sunloungers and parasols are paid for separately.

Border Rules and Documents

• No visa required. Croatia is part of Schengen: holders of biometric passports may spend 90 days there in each half-year.
• Passport. Keep a margin: Schengen requires validity three months beyond your exit from the EU, and tour operators recommend six.
• Accommodation booking. Border guards may ask to see it for your whole stay, so have the voucher ready.
• EES. Registration happens on your first Schengen entry: at the EU frontier on the coach route, in Poland for Polish charters, and at the Croatian frontier when coming from Tivat in Montenegro.
• Children and leaving Ukraine. Pack the child's original birth certificate; the rules on who may leave Ukraine, especially minors and men liable for service, are revised often, so confirm them when you book.
