Tours to El Alamein — Egypt's Mediterranean Resort

El Alamein is a resort on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, about 100 km west of Alexandria. Holidaymakers choose it for its fine white sand, turquoise water and a milder summer than on the Red Sea: in August, the air warms up to +31…32°C and the sea to +27…28°C. Nearby are the young city of New Alamein with its promenade and restaurants, as well as the World War II memorials.
The season runs from May to October, and this is when tour operators schedule direct charter flights from Chisinau; the flight takes about 3 hours. The tour price already includes the flight, transfer, accommodation, meals and insurance. El Alamein or the Red Sea
El Alamein is nothing like Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. Here are the main differences:
| El Alamein | Red Sea | |
|---|---|---|
| Sea | Mediterranean, clear; waves on windy days | warm all year round, usually calm in the bays |
| Beaches | fine white sand, no corals | sand; coral reefs off the shore at many resorts |
| July–August | +31…32°C, with a fresh sea breeze | +35…38°C, intense heat |
| Season | May–October | all year round |
| Snorkelling and diving | no reefs | some of the best reefs in the world |
| Flight from Chisinau | ≈ 3 h | ≈ 3–3.5 h |
El Alamein is the choice for a summer beach holiday on white sand without exhausting heat: with children, as a couple or combined with trips to Alexandria. For winter holidays, snorkelling or a smaller budget, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada or Marsa Alam are a better fit.
When to Go to El Alamein: Weather by Month
| Month | Air / sea | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| May | +27…28° / +20…21° | start of the season, the sea is still cool |
| June | +29…30° / +23…24° | warm but not hot, the sea warms up quickly |
| July | +31…32° / +26° | peak season on the coast |
| August | +31…32° / +27…28° | the warmest sea |
| September | +30…31° / +27° | the sea is still warm, and there are fewer holidaymakers |
| October | +27…28° / +25…26° | velvet season; wind and waves become more frequent towards the end of the month |
Green marks the months with the warmest sea. Approximate averages: daytime air temperature / water temperature.
From November to April, the water cools to +17…22°C, winds are more frequent and storms occur, so there are no charter flights at this time. For a winter holiday, choose the Red Sea resorts, where you can swim all year round.
Beaches and Sea
El Alamein's beaches are wide, with fine white sand that stays cooler than dark sand even in the heat. The water is clear and turquoise, and the entry into the sea is mostly gentle and sandy, which makes it convenient for families with children. There are no corals near the shore, so you will not need special swimming shoes.
The Mediterranean is more changeable than the Red Sea: waves rise on windy days, so watch the beach flags and follow the lifeguards' instructions. Most hotels have their own beaches with sunbeds and umbrellas, and some are located in sheltered bays with fewer waves.
Where to Stay: Areas of the Coast
- New Alamein — a young city built from scratch: high-rises by the sea, a long promenade, shopping centres and restaurants. It is the liveliest area in the evening, and in summer it hosts a festival with concerts by Arab pop stars.
- Sidi Abdel Rahman and Marassi — a bay with one of the most beautiful beaches on the coast and a resort town with a yacht marina, restaurants and upscale hotels. It is quieter here and closer to the airport.
Some hotels stand on their own along the coast: these are large resorts with a private beach, pools and entertainment, where you can stay for the whole holiday. There are also adults-only hotels for those looking for peace and quiet.
What to See in and around El Alamein
- World War II memorials. In 1942, the battles that changed the course of the war in North Africa were fought near El Alamein. There is a Commonwealth war cemetery with more than 7,000 burials, as well as German and Italian memorials overlooking the sea.
- El Alamein War Museum — separate halls devoted to Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Egypt, with tanks and guns from the battlefields displayed outdoors.
- Alexandria — 1.5–2 hours by road: the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay on the site of the famous lighthouse and the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa.
- Marsa Matrouh — 2–2.5 hours to the west: Agiba Bay with its turquoise water, the natural Cleopatra's Bath among the rocks and the Rommel Museum in the cave that served as his headquarters.
- Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza — about 3 hours each way, so it is a full-day trip.
